Gallery Artists George Zhaozhi Xiong
Born in 1948 and raised by a single mother, George Xiong had a harsh childhood. His hometown was located on the bank of the Yangtze, the largest river in China. Deeply affected by the river and its region’s culture, Xiong credits the Yangtze for seeding his artistic vision. Fortuitous fate led him at age 10 to meet his next desk classmate Li, the son of an art professor. With this chance to learn painting, Xiong never looked back. After completing his studies in a Middle School associated with Hubei Art College in 1965, he attended the Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing, which had been the capital of China for over seven hundred years and brimmed with cultural stimulation. The Palace Museum was always his favorite spot for its architectural splendor. During the 1960’s, Mao’s Cultural Revolution broke Xiong’s vision of being a designer and many other dreams as well. In 1970, he was sent to the countryside with all of the teachers and students in the school to receive “re-education” for the next three years. Working in the field and living under the tight rule of the camp. Xiong recalled that “those were my austere and enlightening years. I was depressed by a life that was not my own. But, although it was forbidden, as a young student, I couldn’t resist the desire to paint, and I painted whenever I had a chance. Painting helped me to find my own value and to rebuild my confidence in life.” As the Cultural Revolution drew near its end, Xiong was allowed to return to the city and graduated from school. In 1973, Xiong became an art teacher at Tianjin Fine Art College and worked there for the next 13 years. During that period, he finally married his love, fellow artist Duoling Huang, after an eight-year delay. Huang became his muse, model, critic, and companion. Xiong’s long term art training and teaching experience produced a solid foundation for the future development of his painting style. George Zhi Xiong currently lives and works with his wife Duoling Huang in Las Vegas.
