I have parallel themes that flow through my paintings, drawings, and installations generally; these have been the resources I gather to make meaning for my life. One is more concrete, where the strongest influence is the sensual, rich and vibrant colors of my mother’s sari fabrics, the use of flower petals in various cultural ceremonies and the ornamented objects that resonate with personal stories and of craftsmanship. The other is more philosophical, pertaining to the myriad discussions with my father regarding physics and the laws of nature. The idea that all matter is an illusion, that we are energy that is derived from the vibration of pulse, wave and form has been at the core of my most recent work that includes references to nature as well as constructs of varied systems of belief/science. The observer is the creator of illusions, structures set up in order to understand nature. The field of quantum mechanics generates much thought for me regarding nature and its "relative realities" as it may pertain to layers of consciousness. Visually I try to do the same in my work. I employ various media concentrating on the use of encaustic, a paint made from a mixture of pigment, beeswax and resin, fused by heat after application. Included within the layers of the paintings are any one or combination of media including collage, watercolor, ink, oil, and graphite, at times using textiles, paper, thread, enamel, glass and flower petals. I also employ these materials toward installations as it suits my artistic voice for a particular idea.
